Mask vs redact: what is the difference?

Redaction permanently removes a value; masking replaces it with a reversible stand-in. Choose the right threat model for text, PDFs, or screenshots.

Redaction permanently removes a value from the copy you will share. Masking replaces it with a stand-in while a separate mapping still exists for restoration. Redaction is irreversible; masking is not. Use redaction when the shared artifact must stand on its own. Use masking when you expect work back and need to reconnect it to the original record.

What changes when you redact or mask a document?

Destructive redaction removes selected content from the released copy. A proper redaction process is different from drawing a dark shape over a page. Adobe's official guidance separates applying redactions from marking content and includes a sanitization step for hidden information.

Masking replaces the selected value with a stand-in. The shared copy carries the stand-in, while the person who created it keeps a separate mapping that can restore the original later. The document can remain useful for a summary, review, translation, or draft without sending the mapped value to the immediate recipient.

Who will receive the file, and how long will it circulate?

Start with the recipient, the mapping, and the life of the artifact.

  • The immediate recipient sees the copy you send. Both methods can keep a covered value out of that copy, provided the masking map stays separate and the remaining context does not reveal the person.
  • The mapping holder can reverse a mask. That is useful for a round trip, but it means the mapping still exists and needs its own handling decision.
  • A future holder may receive the artifact after the original workflow is over. Destructive redaction is the better choice when that future copy must not depend on you protecting a separate map.

Masking and redaction can therefore produce similar immediate-recipient outcomes without being equivalent against every threat. The difference is not the colour of the cover. It is whether a path back to the value remains.

Removing obvious identifiers also does not settle every re-identification risk. As NIST's de-identification guidance explains for government datasets, surrounding details can still distinguish a person. For a document, that means reviewing the story left visible, not only the fields that were covered.

When is destructive redaction the right choice?

Choose destructive redaction when the removed value should not return in the workflow. Common cases include:

  • a public or long-lived output;
  • a final copy that should not carry a restoration path;
  • a copy that will circulate after the working session ends;
  • a record for which there is no later restoration step; or
  • a workflow where you cannot keep a reversible mapping apart from the shared copy.

When is reversible masking the right choice?

Choose masking when you expect useful work back and the real values need to return afterward. A masked working copy can preserve the structure of a note, invoice, form, screenshot, or PDF while replacing selected values with stable stand-ins.

The mapping is what makes the round trip possible. Keep it apart from the copy you send. When the reply returns with the same stand-ins, restore the real values in the environment that holds the mapping, then review the result before it re-enters the record.

How should you choose for the file in front of you?

  • Nothing needs to come back: favour destructive redaction.
  • A reply must reconnect to the real record: consider reversible masking.
  • The mapping cannot be kept separate: do not create a reversible copy.
  • The remaining context points to one person: revise the copy. Neither treatment fixes an identifying story you left visible.

The useful question is not what the tool calls the action. Ask whether the original value still exists, where it exists, and who needs it later.
